The shape of the trip

Route: UNC first, UVA Engineering anchored, history + Charleston home

This live itinerary now starts at 845 Wilmon Court in Tallahassee, makes the long push to Chapel Hill, uses Thursday for UNC plus the Blacksburg pass-through, protects Friday/Saturday UVA time, locks the Saturday 1:00pm UVA Engineering tour, then moves to Colonial Williamsburg at 3:00pm and returns home through Charleston.

Current decision: Saturday stays UVA-heavy. Be at Thornton Hall A-Wing early for the 1:00pm Engineering tour, depart Charlottesville around 3:00pm, use Saturday night for Williamsburg dinner/atmosphere, Sunday morning for Colonial Williamsburg, Sunday evening for the Charleston return break, and Monday for the Tallahassee leg.

University of Virginia

Aerospace

BS Aerospace Eng. inside Mechanical & Aerospace (not a standalone dept). Strength in hypersonics + propulsion — Aerospace Research Lab has supersonic/hypersonic test rigs; students have flown experiments on NASA sounding rockets. UVA Rocketry competes at Spaceport America Cup; a student CubeSat has flown on a NASA launch.

Electrical / Chips

The headline: ECE's CHIPS focus path (Circuit Hardware Integration for Processing & Systems). Undergrads take Intro to VLSI (ECE 4332) and design a full chip in Cadence, plus FPGA, ASIC/SoC, analog IC and RF courses. The IFAB cleanroom + Nanoscale Materials Characterization Facility = ~$10M in microfabrication.

VA semiconductor role

Core partner in VAST (Virginia Alliance for Semiconductor Technology); IFAB is an official VAST shared-access fab. UVA has publicly positioned itself behind Virginia's CHIPS-era microelectronics push.

Admissions model: apply directly to the School of Engineering (that's the competitive gate) — but once in, all majors are open: declare aero or ECE at end of first year, no secondary GPA cutoff. Friendliest model for a kid torn between aero and chips.
See on campus: Thornton Hall engineering complex, IFAB cleanroom windows, Lacy Hall makerspace — then the Rotunda and Lawn for the Jefferson layer.
Verdict: the only school on this trip where he could tape out a chip as an undergrad and do hypersonics research at the same university. Make the admissions-session questions about CHIPS-path access and undergrad research slots.

William & Mary

Honest framing

No engineering school, no ABET degrees, no aero or ECE department. What it actually offers: the new School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics (2025) — top-tier physics, CS, data science, applied science.

The engineering-adjacent path

Physics BS with EPAD concentration (Engineering Physics & Applied Design): physics core + applied design/electronics + heavy use of the Small Hall Makerspace. Strong physics research aided by proximity to Jefferson Lab (national accelerator facility, Newport News).

The 3+2 route

Dual-degree Combined Plan with Columbia: 3–4 years at W&M (physics/EPAD) then 2 at Columbia SEAS — graduate with both a W&M BS and a Columbia engineering BS (EE or mechanical/aero track).

Admissions model: admitted to the university as a whole — no engineering gate, majors declared freely.
See on campus: Small Hall — makerspace (laser cutters, electronics benches, open to all students) and undergrad research labs. Then the Wren Building for the history layer.
Verdict: only fits if he wants a liberal-arts setting first and engineering via Columbia or grad school. Weak fit for hands-on undergrad aero/chip design — and the visit will make that contrast with UVA obvious within an hour, which is exactly why it's worth touring.

Virginia Tech

Aerospace

Dedicated Crofton Dept. of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering — strongest in the state, ~#13 national undergrad aero. The Stability Wind Tunnel (6×6 ft) is one of the largest university tunnels in the US. Rocketry@VT (student-built propulsion), an Orbital Launch Vehicle Team targeting the 100 km Kármán line with a CubeSat, Design-Build-Fly, Space@VT.

Electrical / Chips

Bradley ECE runs the Micron Technology Semiconductor Processing Lab — a micro/nanofab cleanroom majorly upgraded in 2024 for semiconductor + quantum-device fabrication. Undergrad VLSI, chip-scale fab and microelectronics coursework; computer engineering is its own ABET major.

VA semiconductor role

Leads VAST statewide (with UVA, GMU, VCU, Norfolk State). Micron — whose Manassas fab is one of America's ~20 major fabs — is a named partner and lab sponsor.

Admissions model (the catch): everyone enters as General Engineering, then competes into aerospace/ECE for sophomore year — popular majors are GPA-competitive. Riskier than UVA's open-declaration model.
If he visits later: the Stability Wind Tunnel and the new ECE cleanroom. Blacksburg is ~420 round-trip miles off this route — a future dedicated visit.
Verdict: on paper the best aero+chips combination in Virginia. The general-engineering-first funnel is the one real caveat to discuss on the drive.

Aerospace

No aero major — it's a concentration inside Mechanical Eng., but GMU leads NASA's $19.5M Landolt mission (artificial-star satellite; students build the payload) — first NASA mission led by a D.C.-area university. Northrop Grumman 'Space Forward' seminar launched 2026. Fairfax County hosts five major aerospace/defense primes.

Electrical / Chips

BS EE + BS Computer Engineering; newer strengths in quantum (QSEC center) and a new on-campus cleanroom built for chip-fabrication training.

VA semiconductor role

VAST partner; hosts VAST's Semiconductor Chip Fabrication & Nano-Characterization certificate (fall 2025) — a direct pipeline to Micron Manassas, ~20 minutes away.

Admissions model: least selective of the four (clean safety at 1450). Majors declared after gateway courses — low drama.
If extending someday: Fuse at Mason Square (new 345k sq ft tech building) or the Fairfax cleanroom; pairs with Udvar-Hazy Center 20 min away.
Verdict: the employability play — NASA mission, Micron pipeline, NoVA defense industry. Lower-ranked ECE, no aero major; belongs on the application list, not necessarily this windshield time.

  • Fastest pattern: arrive low-ish, charge to what the next leg needs, leave before the curve flattens (~80%).
  • Book hotels with Level 2 / destination charging in Blacksburg/Christiansburg, Charlottesville, Williamsburg and Charleston where possible — it converts dead time into range.
  • Confirm arrival margin before leaving the last Supercharger of each day.

The two big days

~608 mi to Chapel Hill likely needs 3–4 charge stops; ~448 mi to Charleston and ~399 mi home are the other big return legs. Run each leg in Tesla Trips the night before; weather, grades, traffic and hotel charging will move the plan.
