Admissions visit — two official formats
- Format: 30-min info session + either a Mason Ambassador-led tour (~90 min) or the official self-guided tour with a provided map (~45 min — yes, Mason literally publishes a 45-minute self-guided option).
- Register: Mason events calendar (sessions close 2 days prior; up to 2 guests; arrive 20–30 min early).
- Departs from: Mason Tour and Visitor Center, next to the Rappahannock Parking Deck. Contact: [email protected].
Engineering-specific: CEC Visit Day
- CEC Visit Day (College of Engineering and Computing): check-in 9:15am ground floor of the Johnson Center → 10am info session in the JC Cinema → campus tour → lunch → CEC program overview + major-specific browsing; runs to ~2:30pm on select dates.

The 45-minute walk
Mason hands you the official self-guided map at the Tour and Visitor Center — their published version of this exact 45-minute walk. The route below threads the Fairfax campus core landmarks in walking order so you know what you're looking at before they hand you the map.
Start: Mason Tour and Visitor Center
Beside the Rappahannock Deck. Pick up the official self-guided map (and validate parking). Walk south into the core.
Mason Pond & the Center for the Arts
The campus's calm corner — pond, fountain, concert hall. A good first read on the Fairfax campus's surprising greenness given it's 20 minutes from the Beltway.
Wilkins Plaza & the George Mason statue
The ceremonial heart. Rub the statue's toe (the local good-luck ritual), read the Bill of Rights excerpts — George Mason wrote the Virginia Declaration of Rights that Jefferson drew on, a neat callback to the trip's history spine.
Johnson Center
The all-in-one student hub (and CEC Visit Day check-in point) — food hall, library, cinema under one roof. Mason's commuter-plus-residential energy is most visible here at lunch.
Horizon Hall & the academic core
The newest large academic building, anchoring the modernized core. Fenwick Library sits adjacent.
Engineering quarter: Nguyen Engineering Building
Home of the College of Engineering and Computing, with the new cleanroom built for chip-fabrication training — host facility for VAST's Semiconductor Chip Fabrication & Nano-Characterization certificate.
Finish: back via Wilkins Plaza
Loop back to the Visitor Center. If it's a NoVA day-trip: the Udvar-Hazy Center (Space Shuttle Discovery, SR-71) is 25 minutes away and pairs perfectly with this campus for an aerospace kid.
Engineering at George Mason
No aero major — it's a concentration in Mechanical Eng. — but GMU leads NASA's $19.5M Landolt mission (artificial-star satellite; students build the payload), the first NASA mission led by a D.C.-area university. Northrop Grumman "Space Forward" seminar; five aerospace/defense primes in Fairfax County.
BS EE + BS Computer Engineering; growing quantum strength (QSEC center) and the new cleanroom for chip-fabrication training in the Nguyen Engineering Building.
VAST partner; hosts VAST's Semiconductor Chip Fabrication & Nano-Characterization certificate (fall 2025) — a direct pipeline to Micron Manassas, ~20 minutes away.
Lowest-drama path
Least selective of the four — a clean safety at 1450. Majors declared after gateway courses (Calc II etc.); no competitive internal funnel.
Employability + proximity
NASA mission hardware, Micron internship pipeline, defense-contractor row, D.C. federal labs. The kid who wants a paycheck-relevant resume by junior year does very well here.
