The 45-minute walk

VT's official self-guided stops live inside the Hokies on Track app (use its 30- or 60-min option on the day). The walk below threads the canonical campus-core landmarks the official tours cover, in order from the Perry Street Deck — load the app at the first stop and let the Hokie Ambassador narration run alongside.

Start: Perry Street Deck → Stanger Street

Park, open Hokies on Track, and walk south into the academic core. Almost every building you'll pass is faced in Hokie Stone — dolomite limestone from the university's own quarry; it's in the campus building code.

Goodwin Hall

The flagship engineering building: 155,000 sq ft, and famously an instrument itself — hundreds of structural sensors make the building a living vibration-research testbed.

Why it matters: this is the front door of the #16-ranked undergrad engineering college and the scale jump from UVA's engineering quarter is immediately obvious.

Torgersen Bridge

The signature arched study bridge over Alumni Mall, linking Torgersen Hall to Newman Library. Walk across it — the framed view of Burruss Hall is the postcard shot.

Burruss Hall & the Drillfield

The administrative centerpiece on the great lawn that organizes the whole campus. The Drillfield is VT's Lawn-equivalent — ringed by Hokie Stone, crossed by everyone, all day.

Why it matters: the land-grant, corps-of-cadets DNA is visible here in a way Jefferson's academical village couldn't be more different from. Same state, opposite founding story.

War Memorial Chapel & the Pylons

Eight pylons — Brotherhood, Honor, Leadership, Sacrifice, Service, Loyalty, Duty, Ut Prosim — above the memorial court on the Drillfield's south rim. The April 16 Memorial sits nearby; pay respects.

Randolph Hall area — the aero quarter

Home turf of the Crofton Dept. of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering and the Stability Wind Tunnel — a 6×6 ft tunnel that's one of the largest university-operated in the country. Not generally open for walk-ins; ask about it at the CoE info session or an AOE visit.

Ask at the info session: how competitive is sophomore entry into aerospace from General Engineering, really? What GPA did last year's cutoff land at?

Finish: Ware Lab

End at the one engineering facility that welcomes self-guided visitors — the undergrad design-team lab (Formula SAE, rocketry, Design-Build-Fly hardware on the floor). Then loop back north to the deck (~8 min).

The drive-home question: VT's pitch is scale + hands-on culture, with a competitive major gate. Worth the risk over UVA's guaranteed major choice?

Engineering at Virginia Tech

Aerospace

Dedicated Crofton Dept. of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering — strongest in the state, ~#13 national undergrad aero. Stability Wind Tunnel; Rocketry@VT (student-built propulsion); an Orbital Launch Vehicle Team targeting the 100 km Kármán line with a CubeSat; Design-Build-Fly; Space@VT.

Electrical / Chips

Bradley ECE runs the Micron Technology Semiconductor Processing Lab — micro/nanofab cleanroom majorly upgraded in 2024 for semiconductor + quantum-device work. Undergrad VLSI, chip-scale fab, microelectronics coursework; computer engineering is its own ABET major.

Virginia semiconductor role

Leads VAST statewide (UVA, GMU, VCU, Norfolk State partners). Micron — whose Manassas fab is one of America's ~20 major fabs — is a named partner and lab sponsor.

Admissions model — the catch

Compete into your major

Everyone enters as General Engineering, then applies into aerospace/ECE for sophomore year — popular majors are GPA-competitive. The one structural risk vs UVA's open-declaration model, and the #1 question to press at an info session.

At 1450 SAT

Match for entry — then earn the major

Engineering is VT's most selective entry point but a 1450 + strong math record is squarely in range. The real planning question is the internal funnel, not the front door.

Verdict: on paper the best aero+chips combination in Virginia — wind tunnel, Micron cleanroom, rocketry culture. If this trip's UVA visit doesn't close the deal, Blacksburg earns its own weekend.
