This route is assembled from the stops on UVA's official Admission Office Self-Guided Walking Tour and the Engineering School's official self-guided tour — trimmed to the stops that matter for this kid, in walking order from the parking garage. Start: Newcomb Hall & the Bookstore

Come up from the Central Grounds Garage. Grab a map at the bookstore if you want a paper one — then walk north toward the heart of Grounds. (Yes, "Grounds," not campus — get it right before the info session.)

Peabody Hall & the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers

Peabody is where official admissions tours check in — note it for tomorrow if you booked one. Just beyond, the ring of "Virginia Mist" granite is the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, an official tour stop and one of the most affecting recent additions to Grounds.

Why it matters: the university now tells its full founding story — the contradiction conversation from Monticello continues here.

The Rotunda

Jefferson's half-scale Pantheon and the architectural signature of American higher education. Walk in (free, 9–5 daily), pick up the printed visitor guide, and see the Dome Room.

Why it matters: the only American university founded by a U.S. president, and the centerpiece of the UNESCO World Heritage listing it shares with Monticello — which you'll see tomorrow morning.

The Lawn & Pavilions

Walk the full length south. The ten Pavilions house faculty; the 54 Lawn rooms are earned by standout fourth-years who trade central heating for the most prestigious address in college America. Peek into a pavilion garden through the serpentine walls.

Why it matters: Jefferson designed the "Academical Village" so students and professors live together — ask your tour guide tomorrow whether it still actually works that way.

Old Cabell Hall → McCormick Road

At the Lawn's south end (official tour stop), turn west and cross the McCormick Road overpass toward the engineering quarter.

Thornton Hall — School of Engineering

Established 1836. The A-Wing entrance is where term-time engineering tours depart. Inside: the Dean's office and the NI Engineering Discovery Lab. This is the building on the official engineering self-guided route.

Ask (or note for the requested tour): How do first-years get into the CHIPS focus path? How many undergrads land research slots in the hypersonics work at the Aerospace Research Lab?

Olsson Hall (Link Lab) & Rice Hall

Olsson's 2nd floor houses the Link Lab — 17,000 sq ft of cyber-physical systems research (autonomous vehicles, smart systems). Rice Hall is CS: Lacy Design Lab, robotics and autonomy labs. Both are stops on the official engineering tour PDF.

Why it matters: this corridor is where the EE/chips slant lives — ECE 4332 students design a full chip in Cadence here, and the IFAB cleanroom (the ~$10M microfabrication facility) is part of this complex.

Finish: Mechanical Engineering Building

Home to a flight simulator that logs real pilot's-license hours, plus the Mechatronics lab. End the walk here, then loop back over the overpass to the garage (~5 min).

The dinner question: could you see yourself walking this overpass every morning for four years?
The academic case

Engineering at UVA

Aerospace

BS Aerospace Eng. within Mechanical & Aerospace. Strength in hypersonics + propulsion — supersonic/hypersonic rigs at the Aerospace Research Lab; student experiments have flown on NASA sounding rockets. UVA Rocketry competes at Spaceport America Cup; a student CubeSat has flown on a NASA launch.

Electrical / Chips

ECE's CHIPS focus path: Intro to VLSI (ECE 4332 — design a full chip in Cadence), FPGA, ASIC/SoC, analog IC, RF. The IFAB cleanroom + Nanoscale Materials Characterization Facility ≈ $10M of microfabrication undergrads can actually touch.

Virginia semiconductor role

Core partner in VAST (Virginia Alliance for Semiconductor Technology); IFAB is an official VAST shared-access fab backing the state's CHIPS-era microelectronics push.

Admissions model

The friendliest gate

Apply directly to the School of Engineering — that's the competitive hurdle. Once in, every major is open: declare aero or ECE at the end of first year with no secondary GPA cutoff. For a kid torn between airplanes and silicon, that flexibility is the killer feature.

Engineering admission is the competitive gate; strong essays + demonstrated technical projects (rocketry club, electronics builds) matter. The info session is the place to ask what differentiates admitted engineering applicants.

Verdict: the trip's centerpiece. Real undergrad chip tape-out, real hypersonics, open major declaration — wrapped in the most architecturally famous campus in America.
